A repetitive theme in Paul’s writing is that we have the ability to give thanks in all circumstances. If anyone was tested in this capacity, it was Paul, who had endured about every hardship known during his lifetime. His list of adversities is found in 2 Corinthians 11:23-33 and yet, he calls us to “Give thanks in all circumstances.” This passage sheds light on the secret of Paul’s capacity to find the buoyancy of thanksgiving in times when hardship threatens to deflate us.
